Wellness is not a linear path; it ebbs and flows like the tides. There are moments when we feel unstoppable, hitting all our goals and pushing forward, and then there are moments when we need to pull back, reflect, and reset. Recognizing when you need to Flow Forward or Ebb Back is key to sustaining long-term wellness and avoiding burnout. Here are three tips for each phase to help you find balance in your wellness journey.
Knowing Where You’re At
Before you can decide whether to Flow Forward or Ebb Back, it’s important to tune into where you are right now. Ask yourself these questions:
Signs You May Need to Flow Forward:
Do you feel stagnant or unmotivated?
Have you fallen off track with your wellness practices?
Do you feel disconnected from your goals or your sense of purpose?
Has it been days, weeks, or months since you've done any self-care wellness practices (movement, whole food nutrition, good sleep practices, drinking water, etc.)?
Do you feel like you have no time for yourself?
Signs You May Need to Ebb Back:
Are you feeling drained, overwhelmed, or burnt out?
Is your routine starting to feel like a chore or overly rigid?
Are you experiencing physical fatigue, emotional exhaustion, or resentment toward your wellness plan?
Is your Inner Voice telling you that you're lazy if you take a break, even if you're sick or injured?
Are you beating up on yourself if you miss a workout because of extenuating circumstances or forget to track your food for a meal?
Your answers will help you determine whether you need to lean into action and progress or scale back to rest and reflection. Once you’ve identified where you are, you can take the appropriate steps to restore balance.

When You Need to Flow Forward
You might find yourself feeling stagnant, unmotivated, or disconnected from your wellness goals. Maybe it's been days, weeks, or even months since you did a workout or consistently tracked your nutrition. If that's where you are right now, then acknowledge your reality and make a different choice TODAY that supports your wellness and health!
This is your cue to Flow Forward and reignite your commitment to self-care and vitality. Here are three strategies to get you back on track:
Revisit Your "Why": Take time to remember why you started your wellness journey. Reflect on your goals and the deeper reasons behind them. Write them down and keep them visible as a daily reminder of your motivation.
Start Small and Build Momentum: If you’ve fallen off track, don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to do everything at once. Pick one habit to focus on—whether it’s drinking more water, getting outside for a daily walk, or practicing gratitude—and build from there.
Find Accountability: Share your goals with a trusted friend, join a wellness group, or hire a coach. Having someone to check in with can provide the support and motivation you need to keep moving forward.
When You Need to Ebb Back
Pushing too hard in your wellness practices can lead to burnout, injury, or a sense of overwhelm. It can also do long-term damage to your confidence and self-trust. If you've been following your wellness routines very consistently but noticing that critical voice coming up, telling you that you're not good enough or that you need to push harder because you're lazy... then you might have leaned too far forward and are at risk of burning yourself out.
If you’re feeling exhausted, overly rigid, or resentful to your body, self, or your routine, it’s time to Ebb Back. Here are 3 ways to get you back to balance with your wellness practices:
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of fatigue, aches, or emotional exhaustion. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt. Rest days, lighter workouts, or even a pause in tracking your habits can help you recharge. If you menstruate, make sure you are scaling back your movement during your bleed.
Simplify Your Routine: If your wellness plan feels too demanding, scale back to the essentials. Focus on the core habits that bring you the most energy and joy, and let go of the rest until you’re ready to reintroduce them.
Reconnect with Joyful Movement and Nourishment: Instead of forcing yourself into strict routines, try activities and foods that make you feel good in the moment. Try a new workout or recipe. Dance, garden, or go for a walk in nature. Cook a nourishing meal without the pressure of perfection.
Embracing the Ebb and Flow
Wellness is not about perfection; it’s about listening to your body and mind, and finding a rhythm that supports your vitality. Whether you’re in a phase of flowing forward or ebbing back, remember that both are essential parts of the process. Honor where you are, and trust that each step—whether it feels like progress or pause—is leading you closer to your most vibrant life.
Keep on Shining!
